Apple Watch Is Finally Fixing the Alarm Problem That’s Been Waking Up Everyone Wrong

By Searchpanda - March 28, 2025

Apple is about to make bedtime a lot less risky — especially if you rely on your Apple Watch to wake you up in the morning. With the upcoming release of watchOS 11.4, the tech giant is addressing one of the most complained-about quirks in its wearable lineup: the risk of sleeping through your alarm thanks to Silent Mode.
While the new update isn’t packed with flashy features, it introduces a single, highly anticipated tweak that could be a game-changer for those who sleep with their Apple Watch on — and have missed more than a few alarms because of it.

Say Hello to “Break Through Silent Mode”

Slated to arrive in early April, watchOS 11.4 introduces a feature called Break Through Silent Mode. It does exactly what it sounds like — letting alarms break through when your watch is set to Silent Mode or Sleep Focus.
That’s a big deal. Up until now, if you wore your Apple Watch to bed and had Sleep Focus or Silent Mode enabled, your alarms would only vibrate — no sound. This might be fine if you’re a light sleeper, or if you’re trying not to wake your partner. But for many users, especially heavy sleepers, the vibration simply hasn’t been enough.
The result? Missed alarms, late starts, and plenty of frustrated mornings.
As Tucker Bowe of Gear Patrol pointed out, “Most people who wear their Apple Watch to bed either have Sleep Focus enabled or Silent Mode turned on. Both options silence all notifications to not wake you up during the night. This includes alarms, which vibrate instead.” But vibration alone doesn’t cut it for everyone — and Apple finally seems to agree.

How It Works — and How to Turn It On

By default, Break Through Silent Mode will be turned off, so you’ll need to manually enable it once your watch is updated to watchOS 11.4.
You can do it right on your Apple Watch through one of two routes:

New update breaks silent mode

Option 1: Through the Sleep App

1. Open the Sleep app
2. Tap the alarm icon
3. Choose Sounds & Haptics
4. Toggle Break Through Silent Mode to ON

Option 2: Through the Alarms App

1. Open the Alarms app
2. Tap your desired alarm
3. Select Change in Sleep
4. Go to Sounds & Haptics
5. Toggle Break Through Silent Mode to ON
Once enabled, this feature allows only the alarm to bypass Silent Mode. All other notifications will remain silent or use the regular haptic feedback — so you’re not suddenly flooded with alerts in the middle of the night.

What This Means for Apple Watch Users

While Apple Watch alarms have long been praised for their gentleness — especially with haptic feedback — they haven’t always been reliable for deep sleepers. The addition of Break Through Silent Mode strikes a balance between being considerate of your sleep and making sure you actually wake up.

It’s a subtle tweak, but one that speaks to Apple’s increasing focus on personalizing the watch experience based on how (and when) people use it. Whether you’re a light sleeper or someone who could snooze through an earthquake, this small feature could be a huge improvement in your daily routine.

When to Expect watchOS 11.4

The public beta of watchOS 11.4 has already been available, but the official release is expected to arrive in early April — potentially as soon as next week. So if you’re someone who’s been burned by a missed alarm, relief is right around the corner.
With Break Through Silent Mode, Apple’s finally offering a solution that feels long overdue — and for those who count on their Apple Watch to start the day, it might just be the most important feature of the year.
